Calabria is at the boot of Italy and is a rugged, rural wine producing area that still uses traditional grape growing and wine making practices. 3 percent of the total annual production qualifies as DOC. The main red grape variety is Gaglioppo, and the white is Greco. Many forward thinking producers are resurrecting ancient grape varieties which have been around for as long as 3000 years, these have plenty of character and won’t be found anywhere else.
