In the East of France bordering Geneva and surrounded by the Alps. A massively popular skiing area in the winter and get away in the summer, the wines are normally borrowed well known varietals (Gamay, Pinot Noir) which are not exported. If you have tried them, you were most likely on holiday! Most of these wines are sold under Vin de Savoie, though there are some smaller appellations. The Savoie also posses local varieties, of which the most important and successful in the South is Altesse and the North Chasselas. Mondeuse is a famed local red grape, is deep, peppery and goes well with Raclette (local cheese).
