Riesling
GrapeWhite: This variety is without a doubt one of the better known 'aromatics'. Produces possibly some of the most interesting and complex dry & sweet white wines on the market today. It is a late ripener, making it ideal for late harvesting where it is affected by Botrytis (giving it its characterisitc sweetness) but also retaining its acidity. Cool Climates: In places such as Mosel it produces fresh grape and apple characters with a natural high acidity.
Warmer Climates: Late-harvested and vines grown in places such as Austria, Alsace and Clare Valley often produce wines that have more peach and citrus notes. Usual characters throughout are high acid.Riesling wines age very well and often develop some unusual secondary and tertiary aromas such as honey, smoke and petrol.
Classic Riesling growing countries are: Mosel, Nahe, Rheingau and Pfalz in Germany; the Weichau in Austria; Alsace in France; the Clare and Eden Valley in Australia; and Marlborough and Nelson in New Zealand.
