France: Southern Rhone: Red and White: Found its name from the 14th century when the Pope moved from Rome to Southern France and means “Popes New Castle”. It is the most famous and probably the most important appellation in the Southern Rhone. It produces rich, spicy, full-bodied red wines which range from jammy, tannic and unbalanced at worst, but at best are some of the top wines in the world displaying ripe fruit, alongside smoke and leather and whilst being powerful, remaining refined. They are also well known for their embossed bottles on the neck.
Grapes: The top grape here is Grenache but many more are allowed (Up to 13 including Mourvedre, Cinsault, Syrah)
Regions: Chateau de Beaucastel, Domaine de la Janasse, Clos des Papes, Le Vieux Donjon, Herni Bonneau, Château Rayas
