Carignan
GrapeRed: Was the most widely-planted red wine grape in France and is usually used throughout the world as a component of blends. Due to the European wine lake a lot of the Carignan plantings have been grubbed up. Most Carignan is confined to the Languedoc and Southeastern France. The grape needs warmer climates to ripen but has the positive of high yields. The berries are quite large and thick, and the species has a tendency to mutate.
It produces wines that are high in colour, acidity, and tannin. Older vines produce more concentrated versions with a bit more character. Many can be made using the Carbonic maceration technique.
Other Names: Carginano, Mazeulo
