Austria

Region
Austria is famed for dry white wines as well as some outstanding sweet wines. The white grape Gruner Veltliner has become famed from this country. The local wine laws are based around their German equivalents. A third of all Austrias red wines are made from Blaufränkisch (Kékfrankos) and Pinot Noir. Most of wine produced is consumed in Austria or neighboring countries. After scandal in the 1980's Austria has worked hard to distance itself from bulk wine production with a slight anti freeze aftertaste. to high quality, fine wine and they are starting to succeed.

Important regions are:
Wachau - Famed for world class Gruner Veltliner and Riesling.
Burgenland - Neusiedlersee - Can produce affordable, good quality sweet wines as Lake Neusiedl is one of the only places that produces noble rot reliably every year.
