Alsace
Alsace's climate is largely influenced by the Vosges mountains which shelter the region from rain, making it one of the driest regions in France. Unlike many other parts of France in Alsace the name of the grape variety will often appear on the label alongside the appellation. There is a large range of wines from Alsace AC to those made from Grand Cru vineyards. White wines are the norm suchas:
Pinot Gris: Which is full bodied dry, medium or sweet whites with spicy tropical fruit flavours and hints of honey. This is the same grape as Pinot Grigio but made in a different style, it is allowed to hang on the vine longer to develop these flavours.
Gewurztraminer produces intensely perfumed wines that can be dry, off-dry or medium, full body and high alcohol.
Riesling is also popular making warmer climate styles than Germany, these can be very long lived.
Refreshing whites are also made from Pinot Blanc and Muscat and there are a few light red wines made from the Pinot Noir grape.
